Coffee is one of the most traded commodity in the whole world – in fact, the second most imported one – only beaten by oil. The high amounts produced every year, paired with the high demand makes it quite a volatile one to trade. Coffee has always been prone to high swings in price. And here’s why:

The price for coffee massively differs depending on the type – Arabica or Robusta. The varietals are traded on different exchanges: while Arabica is traded at the ICE in New York (known as the ‘C market’), the LIFFE in London trades Robusta. Both exchanges set the price for coffee, the so-called ’C price’.

There are many triggers for the C price to change. Climate change, coffee plant diseases and other agricultural challenges can affect a farmer’s crop drastically, often leaving them with no choice than raising the price for their beans. As seen on many other markets, rising transport and shipping costs are another reason for the coffee price to go up. Arabica being traded and priced in US$ makes it prone to price swings as well, depending on how the dollar increases or falls. Political events, crises and decisions certainly affect the coffee production, demand and supply as well. And last but not least, speculations and traders’ actions define the futures price of coffee, being listed the stock exchange after all.

Many (more) reasons can be named for the ever-changing coffee price, which by the way has reached its historical peak this year in November. Being aware of how the pricing and hard work all along the coffee supply chain work helps us understand and appreciate the product – which at the end of the day we love so much.

As we enter the month of December, we have the cosiest coffee for you out on the shelves. Proudly presenting: IDN9 Asman Arianto

On the island of Sumatra, Asman Arianto is cultivating this beautiful coffee to its fullest potential. The local varietals Abyssinia, Ateng, Gayo and Timtim are grown at 1,700 metres altitude, handpicked, pulped and then dried on raised beds in greenhouses with the mucilage of the coffee cherry still attached to the beans.

This honey-processed coffee is super sweet, comes with delicious notes of raspberry, chocolate and raisins, as well as a spicy hint of cinnamon in the aftertaste.🥵

Come try this amazing coffee – it’s great both as a pour over and espresso!
