Frech Press

Brewing Guide : French Press

Step 1 : Grind

Select the coffee you want to enjoy and grind it coarse (similar to fine breadcrumbs) and measure it into the French Press.

Ground coffee for French Press

For the French Press, we recommend a 1:14 ratio between coffee and water. So, for every 1 gram of coffee, you use 14 ml of water or 35 grams of coffee too 500 ml. of water. But you should experiment and find the ratio you like best.

If possible, always grind the beans just before brewing to retain aroma and taste.

Step 2 : Pour Water

When your water comes to a boil, take it off the heat and let it rest for about 30 seconds for the temperature to drop to 92 – 96 Celcius (195–205 degrees F). Colder water will result in flat, under-extracted coffee, while water that is too hot will result in bitter and over-extracted coffee.

Start a timer or keep a close eye on your watch. Pour enough water to submerge all the coffee, and give it a gentle stir. Pour the rest of the water. Don’t put the lid on just yet.

When the timer reaches 4 minutes, grab a spoon and scoop away any grounds that have floated to the top of the brewer. This is to prevent the grounds from entering the final brew and they also contain a lot of the coffee’s bitterness. Discard the grounds. After further 4 minutes start to gently push the filter down (this should take 20–30 seconds).

Please also note that water quality has a great influence on the finished brewed coffee, and you should experiment with different kinds of bottled water if your tap water is not good or imparts a strong odor or taste, such as chlorine.

Step 3 : Enjoy

The coffee is continually extracted in the French Press and should be poured into cups rather fast. So pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy.

Read about the coffee and see if you agree with the description and can recognize some of the flavour notes. Or just enjoy your brew and send a kind thought to the farmer who made this possible.
