Linares Garcia

The Asociación de Productores Cafetaleros Juan Marco “El Palto” – in short, JUMARP – was founded by José Carranza Barboza in 2003, together with 35 other smallholder farmers. They created the association out of a desire to develop a new model of growing and exporting coffee. In 2012, JUMARP “El Palto” launched an ambitious program for quality improvement among its members. They collected funds from the Fairtrade and Organic premiums, from government funding and contribution of the members themselves.

Linares Garcia

The Linares Garcia family has been a member of the JUMARP cooperative since its inception in 2003. Their farm lies in Nuevo Amazonas at 1600 meters above sea level. On 6.5 hectares they farm mainly coffee and keep some chickens. Varieties under cultivation are Caturra and Catimor. Since El Palto’s plan for infrastructural improvements on all members’ farms, they are also equipped with a small pulper and fermentation tank as well as a parabolic drier with raised beds.

The coffee was selectively harvested and processed on-site following a classic washed process. The peak of the harvest in the region falls in July and August. Once the coffee has reached 12% moisture, they bring down the lots in parchment to El Palto’s buying center in the village.
